1st GENERATION emerges from a cultural climate increasingly defined by fear of difference.At a time when diversity, immigration, and cultural identity are being politicized, reduced to talking points, and in many cases openly attacked, Galerie Shibumi remains committed to celebrating the artists and communities that make New York one of the most important cultural capitals in the world.
In collaboration with Creative Urban Alchemy, this exhibition honors artists who were born across the globe and now call the United States home. Each artist brings with them a distinct visual language shaped by memory, migration, ancestry, survival, longing, adaptation, and hope. Together, these works form a collective portrait of what it means to build a life, identity, and creative practice between cultures.
As Galerie Shibumi’s largest and most ambitious group exhibition to date, FIRST GENERATION brings together an extraordinary range of voices, perspectives, and lived experiences that reflect the complexity and beauty of contemporary New York.
New York has always belonged to dreamers, outsiders, immigrants, and risk takers. Its greatest strength has never been sameness. It has always been the collision of stories, languages, aesthetics, and perspectives that could only exist here. FIRST GENERATION is our way of honoring that reality and protecting it.

The exhibition seeks to feature garments, jewelry, masks, performances, accessories, sculptures, or photography/video documentation of objects in relation to the body and more. Instead of using mannequins, the show will primarily be installed with works hanging on exhibition-grade galvanized cable cord, symbolic of a clothes line. The curation reflects on the line as in a clothes line; a timeline; to transcend boundary lines; the line as yarn/fiber; blurring the line; a life line; to be on the edge/outskirts; drawing the line; reading in between the lines.Area 405

Curated by Mina Sarfaraz and Nadia NazarGrowing up under the rapid synchronized development of the internet and the climate crisis, impermanence has dictated our lives. As witnesses of industrialization’s indefinite expansion, we wonder how to root ourselves in a foundation that bears constant extraction, extinction, and exploitation. We ground ourselves in the cultivating of homes, in remembering what was and fostering what could be. What if we stick our hands in the soil? What if we shape the air? Blow the dust off of our fingertips? What if we let things get dirty?

This exhibition gathers a group of artists whose practices stretch, knot, weave, drape,
and assemble soft materials into spaces of inquiry and transformation. Each artist
uses sculpture as a way to reimagine what it means to hold weight, to occupy space,
and to invite intimacy. Together, their works propose that softness is not weakness
but a radical gesture, an insistence on tenderness, process, and care in a world that
often privileges hardness, speed, and efficiency.
Material as Memory, Process as Resistance
The participating artists approach material not as a neutral tool but as a site of
history, memory, and transformation.
